This new 1/48 scale decal release from Cutting Edge will appeal to Luftwaffe aficionados.

There are four marking options. Two Fw 190A-6s feature wild chequerboard patterns on the forward cowl. The remaining two subjects are “White 20”, a Fw 190A-7 of JG.1 with a wide red RVD band and toned-down fuselage crosses; and Red 13, a Fw 190A-6.

All the decals on my sample are in perfect register. They are thin and display minimal carrier film. This will be important, as the checks are supplied individually. They are designed to be applied over a white-painted cowling. This will undoubtedly produce the best result, but will require patience and attention to the instructions to ensure the right checks are applied to the correct spot on the cowling. Some extra checks are supplied in case of accidents!

The personal “M” marking for “White 20” is supplied in three colours, as the colour of the original is uncertain.

Additional markings such as exhaust “Adlers” and spinner spirals are included, but stencil markings are not.

Some conversion of stock kits will be required for totally accurate results. The A-6 can be achieved by using the Tamiya Fw 190F-8 with Cutting Edge’s Fw 190 multi-variant conversion set. The Fw 190A-7 is a simple conversion of the Dragon Fw 190A-8 (from memory, the location of the pitot tube is the major visible difference).

These decals will add some welcome colour to grey Fw 190s.

Recommended.

Thanks to Cutting Edge Modelworks for the review decals.
